Event Policy

Proposals for events are approved by the group during general meetings (Sundays at 5 p.m.), on a case-by case basis with emphasis on the purpose and inclusiveness of the event. Priority is given to events that further the social goals of the space (opposition to all forms of prejudice, bigotry and oppression), as well as those that are both accessible and welcoming to a wide range of people. To propose an event, fill out the events form and bring it to a Sunday meeting, or submit it to a 123 volunteer in order to have them present it at the meeting. It is best to attend the meeting where your event will be discussed in order to answer any questions that may arise.

Picture This! is a free program designed to help young people from the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn develop useful skills as a means of expression and self-discovery.

Working with experienced volunteers, children involved in the program learn to use photography and creative writing as tools to examine their lives, communities, families and environment.

Picture This! is taught by photojournalist Andrew Stern and writer Glass D. Neary along with other volunteers from the 123 Community Space. It draws inspiration and lesson plans from The International Center of Photography's Focus on Photography: A Curriculum Guide which is designed to inform educators about the many possibilities and interdisciplinary applications of photographic education in school and after-school settings (grades K-12). The guide is free may be downloaded at: http://icp.org/museum/education/curriculum_guide . Picture This! combines training in visual literacy through discussions and writing with hands on photographic assignments and activities.

All materials and services are provided free by Picture This! and the 123 Space, and we are currently seeking funding and both monetary and equipment donations.

Bring black and white artwork on plain white paper or a transparency, and a screen if you have one. We have a small collection of screens -- you can purchase one from us for $5-$15, depending on the size and whether or not you want to keep the screen for later use. The fee for exposing your artwork on the screen is $3-$5. We also provide affordable screenprinting services, but really encourage doing it yourself. It's a skill you can use forever.

We plan to add more weekly open hours in the near future, and will be holding free screenprinting classes in the upcoming weeks. All ages and skill levels are welcome!

Ride for freedom!

Support US-held Political Prisoners and Prisoners-of-War, as well as
collective cycling empowerment, at ROLLING DOWN THE WALLS, a 5-mile
bike ride to benefit the ABCF Warchest and the Freegan Bike Workshop!

On Sunday, August 31st, 2008 join in the community effort to support
and raise awareness of those who have been targeted and punished for
their political actions and beliefs.
Bring your wallet and checkbook and get ready to ride!

Join us at 123 Community Space at 6 pm.
The ROLLING DOWN THE WALLS
ride will begin at 6:30 as we set off into the sunset, across the
Williamsburg bridge and arrive at St. Marks Church for refreshments
at the Anarchist Salon, a new anarchist space opening every Sunday
from 6-10. Get your picture taken at the top of the bridge with your
bike, your friend, your crush, or your friend's bike.
Send a copy to your Political Prisoner penpal(s)!

Founded in 1994, the Warchest Program has provided consistent and
reliable financial aid to Political Prisoners and Prisoners-of-War
held within the US prison system who receive little or no other
financial aid. Since its creation, it has raised over $50,000 for
these prisoners and will continue in these efforts.

The Freegan Bike Workshop shares skills with children and adults so
that they can turn found bike parts into working bicycles.
Workshops are Wed. from 6-9pm, and Sat. 2-7pm at the 123 Community Space.

Both NYC Anarchist Black Cross Federation and the Freegan Bike
Workshop are member organizations of the 123 Community Space.
Take the opportunity to come out and see what all the fuss is about at
123! Then ride for freedom and cross the bridge to the Anarchist Salon.

The first course will be three weeks long so please register. This
is the first class out of three.

This course is for all levels of Spanish speakers, from those that know a
word or sentence to those that only need practice.

The purpose of the course is for people who are interested in learning
Spanish to have a hands on space where Spanish will be made accessible
through practical exercises. These classes will not be grammar focused. They
will focus on participants practicing the components for conversations and
interpretations.

The goal for those who commit to the ongoing three week schedule of classes
will be to have a functioning knowledge of Spanish (the style spoken in
Mexico anyway) and be working up the capacity to be a translator.
