Freegan Feast: Buy Nothing Day Free Community Meal

in
Fri, November 28th, 2008 3:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Come to our Freegan Feast Community Meal on Friday, November 28th
A FREE community meal made with love from the discards of our wasteful society

At the 123 Community Space, 123 Tompkins at Myrtle (Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, take the G train to Myrtle-Willoughby) 3pm onwards to help cook and 8pm to eat

Freegan? Yes, living beyond capitalism. In making everyday food, corporations harm the environment, mistreat workers, and abuse animals. When we buy these products, we support these injustices, because corporations need our money to operate, and when their products sell, it just encourages them to make more. Freegans are people who avoid paying for food and other goods we use in a variety of ways – including recovering good stuff that stores waste. Every day, stores throw away and waste huge amounts of still-fresh food, because they order or make more than they can sell. They could donate it to charity – but instead they just throw it away! Freegans collect this thrown away food from the store’s garbage bags FOR FREE and eat it and share it with others! It may sound strange or gross – but the food is still clean, fresh, and safe to eat. On the day after Thanksgiving, Freegan.info invites you to a FREE dinner made from food collected from stores’ garbage. Join us to help collect the wasted food, prepare the meal... and EAT!

Why the day after Thanksgiving? Because it’s Buy Nothing Day – a holiday designed to get people thinking about how workers, the environment, and animals are harmed in making the products we buy, and about all the good things we can do with our time instead of shopping. It’s a celebration of what can happen when you get OUT of the shopping mall, get your hands OUT of your wallet, and GET TOGETHER... and a rebellion against the oppression caused by our profit-driven system.

VENGAN A NUESTRO
Banquete Freegan

Swap*Meet Clothing Exchange

in
Sun, November 16th, 2008 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

There's a recession / depression in full swing but we still need a way to refresh our wardrobes without breaking our wallets.

swap*meet is a social gathering that aims to encourage awareness about recycling and reusing textiles and clothing. Participants will benefit by swapping their unwanted clothes (or other wearable accessories) and connecting with others while satisfying their desire for attaining something 'new'. The best thing is: swappers will not accumulate debt, guilt or stress from swapping. Everyone is welcome!

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Please bring at least one shopping bag full of clothing, shoes, or accessories (scarves, hats, bags, etc.) in good condition and/or a donation for the Community Space. The stuff that needs the love that you haven't been able to give it. If it's been sitting in your drawer or closet for more than 3 months and you haven't worn it, you should probably just bring it! Please be sure that it's CLEAN* Other acceptable WEARABLES include: hats, shoes, belts, backpacks, fabric yardage, yarn, costumes, etc. BAGS: In addition to the bags that you’ll carry your clothes in, also consider bringing all those plastic/paper shopping bags you’ve been accumulating… They’ll come in handy… OR you can bring a few cloth bags.
