WHEN: Thursday, November 13, 2008, 7PM
Organized by Freegan.info
Since it's inception, Freegan.info's activities have drawn an endless
stream of coverage from media outlets around the world. Almost
immediately, this led to a fear among many active trash pickers that
suddenly all the dumpsters would be locked. Thankfully, this never
happened. But has all this media coverage really helped to spread
Freegan.info's message of sustainability, mutual aid, and
non-participation in capitalism? Or has freegan.info been complicit in
its own mass-media cooptation, contributing to the invention of a
watered-down representation of freeganism that can safely fit within the
corporate media's representation of reality. What strategy should freegans
apply in talking to mainstream media? Should we talk to them at all? Join
us to watch the film "No Such Thing As a Free Lunch", which examines the
relatioship between freegans and mass media, and discuss these questions
with Tate LeFevre, its director.
Synopsis of the Film:
How can a radical activist movement based on limited participation in the
capitalist system use mainstream media to publicize its mission and
further its goals? "No Such Thing as a Free Lunch" follows members of the
Freegan movement--perhaps best known for eating food found in the
garbage--as they lead "trash tours" in New York City, cook feasts with
salvaged food and give interviews to Oprah—all while managing an often
difficult relationship with the media.
Director Bio:
Tate LeFevre is a PhD student in the Anthropology and Culture and Media
Program at NYU, where her dissertation research investigates the emergence
indigenous nationalism in expressive culture in the French Overseas
Territory of New Caledonia (in the South Pacific). Despite focusing on a
very different context, her first film connects with a long-standing
interest in activism, performance and the use of media by grassroots
groups, developed througout her main research focus.
